Magnesium Chloride

Keywords:

Product Introduction

Magnesium chloride is an efficient multifunctional inorganic magnesium salt, combining the roles of hygroscopic agent, coagulant, nutritional supplement, and chemical raw material. With diverse crystalline forms, excellent water solubility, and high bioavailability of magnesium ions, this fundamental chemical in industrial and civil sectors plays a key role in building materials, food processing, snow/ice melting, healthcare, and chemical production due to its good coagulation properties, significant hygroscopic characteristics, and high nutritional value as a magnesium source.

Product Description

Magnesium chloride, chemical formula MgCl₂, typically exists as the hexahydrate (MgCl₂·6H₂O). Industrial grades are also available in anhydrous form and various purity levels. Appearance is colorless or white flakes, granules, powder, or lumpy crystals. It is an important coagulant, antifreeze agent, nutritional fortifier, desiccant, and chemical intermediate, widely used in construction materials (magnesia products), food processing (tofu coagulant, nutritional fortification), deicing salts, dust suppressants, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, textiles, and agriculture.

Working Principle

Its core functionality is based on the chemical properties of magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) and the presence of chloride ions (Cl⁻):

Coagulation/Gelation: Reacts with substances like magnesium oxide (MgO) to form high-strength, heat-resistant magnesium oxychloride cement (Sorel cement).

Hygroscopicity/Moisture Retention: Strong deliquescence allows it to effectively absorb atmospheric moisture, used as a desiccant or to maintain material humidity.

Nutritional Supplementation: Serves as a bioavailable source of magnesium, participating in various enzymatic reactions and metabolism in living organisms.

Protein Coagulation: In the food industry, magnesium ions coagulate soybean protein, used in tofu production.

Freezing Point Depression: Its aqueous solution has a significantly lower freezing point than pure water, making it effective as a deicer and antifreeze.

Dust Suppression: When sprayed as a solution, its hygroscopicity forms a liquid film on dust particles, binding them and suppressing dust emission.

Product Features

Strong Hygroscopicity/Deliquescence: Rapidly absorbs moisture from air and deliquesces; requires airtight storage.

Good Water Solubility: Highly soluble in water; dissolution is exothermic; aqueous solution is weakly acidic.

Excellent Coagulation Properties: Magnesium oxychloride cement formed with MgO exhibits rapid hardening, high strength, wear resistance, fire resistance, and low thermal conductivity.

High Bioavailability: Magnesium ions are essential minerals for the human body; magnesium chloride is a good dietary magnesium supplement source.

Significant Freezing Point Depression: Its aqueous solutions have low freezing points, providing good antifreeze performance.

Thermal Stability: The hexahydrate loses part of its water of crystallization upon heating to ~117°C; decomposes at higher temperatures.

Taste Profile: Food-grade product has a strong salty-bitter taste.
