Product Introduction
Product Description
Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, is a highly corrosive strong alkali, usually in the form of white flakes or particles. It can be dissolved in water to form an alkaline solution, and can also be dissolved in methanol and ethanol. This alkaline substance is deliquescent and can absorb water vapor in the air, as well as acidic gases such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. It is one of the commonly used chemicals. It is widely used and is a necessity in many industrial processes: it is often used in the manufacture of wood pulp paper, textiles, soaps and other cleaning agents. It is also used in flue gas desulfurization and household water pipe unblocking agents.
Main Applications:
1. Used in the production of paper and cellulose pulp.
2. Applied in the manufacturing of soap, synthetic detergents, synthetic fatty acids, as well as the refining of animal and vegetable oils and fats.
3. Served as a desizing agent, scouring agent and mercerizing agent for cotton fabrics in the textile printing and dyeing industry.
4. Utilized in the chemical industry for producing borax, sodium cyanide, formic acid, oxalic acid, phenol, etc.
5. Employed in the petroleum industry for refining petroleum products and in oilfield drilling mud.
6. Also used in the surface treatment of alumina, zinc and copper, as well as in the fields of glass, enamel, tanning, medicine, dyes and pesticides.
Working Principle
The core characteristics of flake caustic soda are strong alkalinity and corrosiveness, and its working principle is mainly based on the following chemical properties:
1. Neutralization Reaction: As a strong base, flake caustic soda can react with acids to produce salts and water. It is often used for the neutralization treatment of acidic substances in industrial wastewater.
2.Saponification Reaction: In the production of detergents and soaps, flake caustic soda undergoes saponification with oils and fats to decompose oil molecules, generating sodium fatty acid (the main component of soap) and glycerol.
3. Hydrolysis Reaction: It has a hydrolytic effect on certain salts and can promote the hydrolysis of organic substances. For example, in the papermaking industry, the alkalinity of flake caustic soda is used to hydrolyze lignin in plant fibers, realizing the separation of fibers and lignin.
4. Hygroscopicity and Deliquescence: Flake caustic soda is highly hygroscopic and prone to deliquescence when exposed to air. It can be used as an industrial desiccant for drying neutral or alkaline gases (such as ammonia).

The storage area shall be equipped with appropriate materials to contain leakage.
Product Features
1. Strong Alkalinity: It has extremely strong alkalinity, and its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline with a pH value of over 13. Contact with skin and mucous membranes can cause severe corrosion, so protective equipment must be worn during operation.
2. Hygroscopicity and Deliquescence: It easily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide in the air and forms sodium carbonate after deliquescence. Therefore, it should be sealed and stored in a dry and well-ventilated environment.
3. Solubility: It is highly soluble in water, releasing a large amount of heat during the dissolution process. When diluting, flake caustic soda must be slowly added to water with stirring. It is strictly prohibited to pour water into flake caustic soda to prevent liquid splashing.
4. Corrosiveness: It has certain corrosiveness to metals, glass, ceramics, etc. In particular, it reacts with aluminum products to generate hydrogen gas. Therefore, storage containers should be made of plastic or stainless steel.
5. Stability: It is stable at room temperature, and decomposes into sodium oxide and water at high temperatures.
